A large-scale rescue and recovery effort is presently under way in the Caribbean region for a pair of missing boats carrying aid cargo traveling from the Mexican coast to Cuba.

Maritime Search and Rescue Operations Launched

Authorities in Mexico has sent naval assets and reconnaissance aircraft to search for the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were carrying at least 9 personnel, according to a official statement.

The vessels had been scheduled to reach the Cuban capital on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been radio silence from them and no official word of their arrival, authorities reported.

The Situation of Aid to Cuba

The Caribbean nation has depended significantly on aid convoys from Mexico over the past few weeks, as the island struggles through widespread power outages across the country.

"Both crews and captains are veteran seafarers, and each boat are outfitted with suitable safety equipment and communication devices," a representative for the convoy said.

The nine-person crew are nationals of France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Officials said it has been in touch with maritime rescue coordination centres from those nations along with their embassy officials.

"The group is collaborating completely with the relevant authorities and are still optimistic in the crews' ability to reach Havana safely," the statement continued.

Recent Humanitarian Delivery

Earlier in the week, the Cuban authorities widely celebrated and greeted with fanfare a different ship that had carried a significant amount of humanitarian aid to the country.

That boat, dubbed "a new Granma" after the yacht in which Castro returned to Cuba to launch the revolution in the 1950s, brought photovoltaic panels, pharmaceuticals, infant formula, bikes and food.

Larger Political Climate

Charity groups and individuals have been at the forefront of initiatives to ship humanitarian aid to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, when a oil sanctions on the country was initiated.

Global bodies have since warned of ""severe" shortages of supplies, with in excess of fifty thousand surgeries postponed in Cuba amid energy rationing.

Foreign policy measures have intensified over the past months, with statements from various leaders underscoring the delicate situation regarding bilateral relations.

In response to certain statements, a high-ranking official from Cuba declared that "the socialist system of Cuba is not up for negotiation."

Reports suggest that initial phases of negotiations were initiated, although their current progress remains uncertain.

The naval forces affirmed it was pledged to using the full extent of its capabilities at its disposal to discover the sailboats and guarantee the safety of the people on board.

To date, there has been no public statement on the disappeared vessels by the government in Havana.
