Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer behind many legendary styles worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died at 80 years old.

His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, including the soft-colored suits that became famous from rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."

Price's death comes less than a month after he debuted his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the famous black velvet "dress" made famous by Princess Diana.

A Lasting Legacy

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the esteemed Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing men's fashion at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that rock legend Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who later wore the bridal gown Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A key creative partner of the late David Bowie, Price created the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to merge tailoring for all genders along with his expert craftsmanship in crafting form-fitting garments established him as a "true original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

During the nineties, he started creating ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as various looks for her US tour after becoming Duchess.

After a career spanning more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London last month in partnership with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: A hallmark of his work.
  • Dramatic Impact: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

The fashion world mourns the loss to a authentic original whose legacy on fashion and music remains deeply ingrained.
