Both Deceased Students Revealed in Brown University Incident as Police Persist in Hunt for Gunman.

Both young individuals who were killed in the weekend's tragic incident on the university campus were being remembered Monday – while an intensive search for their assailant carried on following the freeing by local law enforcement of the single suspect detained in connection in the case.

Honoring a Lost Student

The young woman Ella Cook, a second-year student from Alabama, was remembered as “an incredible, grounded, faithful, bright light”, as stated by the Birmingham's Cathedral Church of the Advent, which honored her memory at a service on Sunday.

Cook was the vice-presidency of Brown’s division of College Republicans of America, as the club stated. Karoline Leavitt also shared sympathies publicly, stating: “Words cannot express. Keeping in mind her loved ones and companions, particularly her mother and father.”

MukhammadAziz Umurzokov

The other deceased individual was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, from Uzbekistan in his first year of studies at the renowned school, according to relatives.

Umurzokov’s identity was officially acknowledged by the foreign office of Uzbekistan.

“He was incredibly kind, funny, and smart. His ambitions were lofty of entering the field of neurosurgery and aiding others,” Samira Umurzokova, his sister said in a memorial statement.

What Happened

Nine more persons were hurt in the violent event in the engineering department of Brown’s grounds in Providence, during the university's examination week.

Officials stated on Sunday evening that a 24-year-man taken into custody in a search at a hotel about 17 miles from the scene earlier in the day was set to be freed.

“We have a murderer out there,” said Rhode Island’s attorney general, Peter Neronha.

He added, “Occasionally a probe goes down a path, and then you must reassess and head another way, and this is precisely what occurred over the last day or so.”

Public Fear

The city's mayor, Brett Smiley, acknowledged: “It is expected to provoke new worry for our city”.

The gunman opened fire inside a classroom in the engineering facility on Saturday, discharging in excess of 40 shots from a handgun, a law enforcement official told the news agency.

Officers that entered the inn seized two firearms and two ammunition clips when the suspect was arrested, as was reported.

Condition of the Injured

Among those wounded, one student was allowed to go home, said the university president, Christina Paxson. Seven more were in serious yet stable state, and one remained in critical care, authorities stated on Sunday.

An educational institution, a private K-12 school in Durham, North Carolina, said Kendall Turner, Kendall Turner, was one of the critically injured.

More Condolences

Cook was honored at a church service in Birmingham on Sunday. A pastor commented, “Her presence was a wonderful, steady, pious glow not only in her youth... but at the university she was an incredible light in that institution as well.”

Martin Bertao, Martin Bertao, posted a statement from the organization. “Ella was recognized for her fearless, heroic, and gentle spirit as she served her chapter and fellow classmates,” he said.

The US ambassador, Jonathan Henick, said he was “deeply saddened” by the passing of Umurzokov in a tribute. “We extend our sincere condolences to his relatives, companions, and peers and lament the passing of his potential.”

Broader Statistics

The fatal shooting at Brown, the nation’s seventh-oldest college with about 7,300 undergraduate and three thousand graduate students, happened during one of at least 392 shooting incidents documented across the United States so far in 2025, according to statistics. That Monday marked the 349th day of the year.
