Bullish Wilfried Nancy does not fear dismissal yet supporters show fury after defeat.
The under-pressure manager declared he had no concerns about dismissal, asserting, “The team is extremely close to a turnaround,” in the wake of sliding worryingly close to the exit with a heavy defeat by Rangers.
A Second-Half Collapse Sees Old Firm Loss
Celtic were in front their oldest rivals at the interval but a disastrous second period allowed the Gers to move level on points with the current Scottish Premiership champions. Nancy, who was brought in in December, has now overseen six defeats in eight fixtures.
“The board and I are united with the board,” insisted Nancy.
Pressed on whether he was concerned, Nancy replied: “It’s not on my mind. I concentrate on finding ways to help my team to be good on details.
Supporters' Anger On Display
Hundreds of supporters voiced their fury – directed at the dugout and directors – by gathering outside the stadium. Club directors are reportedly likely to re-appoint Martin O’Neill, who steered the club during a caretaker period last year, should a change be made.
“The outcomes [that leads to pressure]. That is the situation for the moment. Yet by saying that’s how it is, I am not saying that I am a defeatist guy. Not at all. What I mean we are really close, extremely close to turn things around.”
Focus on the Details
Nancy highlights the fact Celtic play well for a half at a time. For instance, if not for missed chances they would have been more than 1-0 up. “There were positives aside from the fact that we didn't take more goals,” he said. “I accept that we lost, but I have also to be balanced.
“The performance we had at times was of top quality. That is a fact. And I would not speak so positively if it was untrue. But that’s why, when it comes to wins, I said it's a repeating pattern. Which is why I said that we are really close to getting it right. Currently: the fine margins.”
“There were plenty of positives that we did, once more. But now is sustaining it. My outlook would be different if it was not the case. That’s why I am convinced the team can to turn things around.”
Opposition Reaction Response
Danny Röhl played down talk of a championship push in spite of what appeared to be a huge result. “We take it game by game, then we can gradually build momentum,” he said. “The faith in the squad is immense.”
