Christantus Uche Ignites Comfortable Palace Victory at Shelbourne.
Even though entering their maiden continental campaign, Crystal Palace are adapting at a rapid pace. Without star figures like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles left Dublin with a comfortable win that all but guarantees them a spot in the Conference League qualifying rounds.
Another three points in their upcoming match against Finnish KuPS should be sufficient to secure straight entry to the last 16, especially following a previous setback against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Grasp the Opportunity
This occasion offered a chance for some of Palace's lesser-used talent to impress. Christantus Uche, in only his second start since arriving on loan from Getafe, notched the scoring with a clinical goal. Striker Eddie Nketiah contributed a another, scoring for the second game in match.
A Shelbourne team that had finished their domestic season proved outmatched against a mostly second-string Palace outfit. The visitors were already depleted by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with leg injuries.
Dominance Asserted from the Start
In spite of heavy rain in Dublin, Palace quickly established dominance. A slick passing sequence in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, let Nketiah to set up Uche for a straightforward finish.
Midfielder Adam Wharton came close soon after, driving a long-range effort over the bar. Nketiah then appealed for a penalty after bursting into the box, but the official dismissed the appeals.
The formerArsenal striker didn't need to wait long to get his goal, prodding home from close range after Uche's shot had hit the post.
The home side were hanging on desperately. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to escape a booking for two agricultural challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the crossbar with a powerful header from a corner.
Yeremy Pino Seals the Contest
The match was as good as over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past a series of weak challenges before calmly dispatching a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
After the break, coach Oliver Glasner took the chance to rest several players like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse almost scoring his first touch, only to see his effort blocked.
Esse was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one attempt crash off both posts before being clasped on the line. Uche then blazed a sitter of a chance, showing there is still scope for development in his game.
A solitary worry for Palace was a late injury to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This allowed 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to earn his first-team debut, rounding off an otherwise positive evening for the traveling side.
