Israeli citizens mark two-year remembrance of 7 October attacks as Palestinian ceasefire negotiations advance
Citizens have come together around the country to remember 24 months since the Hamas-initiated attack on 7 October 2023, as negotiations continued in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the hostilities in Gaza.
The incident saw in excess of 1,200 people dead and 251 others captured back to Gaza as captives. It was the most deadliest day for the Jewish community since the Second World War.
Israel responded by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken more than 67,000 people, as reported by the area's Hamas-run health ministry. Its figures are regarded as trustworthy by the UN and other international bodies.
"Our bloodthirsty opponents have caused great damage, but they have not broken us," Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Tuesday.
He also promised to "accomplish all the goals of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the removal of the Hamas government and the promise that Gaza will not create a risk to Israel".
Remembrance Gatherings Across Israel
The government authorities postponed official remembrance events until mid-October - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but events still occurred throughout the country on that day.
A memorial ceremony for the relatives of Israelis who died in the Hamas incident was organized in the coastal city. Arranged by the affected families, it was televised throughout Israeli television channels.
A period earlier, a silent tribute was held around the country.
Peace Meetings in Egypt
At the same time, the conflicting parties' negotiating teams convened in the North African coastal city of the Egyptian city for a second day of mediated discussions to examine the conditions of the agreement.
A prominent representative knowledgeable about the negotiations said that an night meeting of indirect talks commenced at 7 PM local time.
The official said the earlier meeting finished without significant progress, due to conflicting views over the recommended Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over assurances Hamas seeks to guarantee Israel does not resume combat after the initial stage of the deal.
He commented that the discussions are "difficult and have still not deliver any significant progress," but mentioned that facilitators are striving to narrow the differences between the conflicting groups.
Critical Matters in Negotiations
- An enduring ceasefire
- The exchange of the captives still kept by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The pullout of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Plans for relief supplies deliveries
- Future management of the area
Civilian Feeling
In Tel Aviv's memorial area that day, 29-year-old a woman - whose sibling lived through the attack on the gathering, where 378 people were lost their lives and many more were taken hostage by Hamas militants - explained: "No location seems like home any longer and until every captive are released no one will feel safe."
"Once we see everybody home once more, we can feel relief once more. Then we can start to rebuild," she concluded.
In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's home in the capital, people congregated to express their support for the loved ones of the captives. Israel says nearly fifty continue in detention in Gaza, twenty of whom are considered to be surviving.
Activist a participant remarked: "It's necessary do whatever arrangement needed for the captives to return. But we truly desire promises that we will be secure."
Surveys now frequently demonstrate that about 70% of the population desire the conflict to end in as payment for the release of the abducted.
Gaza Conditions
At the site of the music event, grieving people came together to pay their respects.
From the site, the boom of Israeli air strikes and shelling could be heard just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where observers said the severe Israeli shelling persisted.
In the urban center, bombardments were noted in the early hours of that day in the western neighborhood, sector and zone neighbourhoods and in the east side district of the community, as well the camp to the northwestern area.
"Once the dusk comes, the anxiety appears with it," evacuated urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose 17-year-old son was died by an Israeli bombing earlier, described.
"We are terrified of the attacks. During nighttime we are resting together, clinging, especially my smallest child who places his head on me the entire evening."
"Constantly we look at the news to see what happened. And I'm worried that this truce will not be completed and that the fighting will resume to us."
Health Situation
The healthcare center in Gaza City announced it had taken in the bodies of half dozen people by the afternoon, including several who lost their lives in an Israeli attack in the southern area.
Nasser hospital in the south region of Khan Younis reported another two fatalities had been transported. One of them was died by Israeli soldiers while attempting to get aid to the south, health workers reported.
The region's health ministry announced 25 of the {territ
