Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Incident

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will be OK after being shot in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during their latest talk.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn commented. “His wife and his kid, they’re in good spirits and he is expected to recover fully.”

The coach did not know when Boyd could be discharged the medical facility, where he has been listed as serious yet stable.

“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “However, I can share, hearing him speak, he seemed very positive. Once more, that’s what gives me comfort, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”

NYPD shared video stills earlier this week of an individual wanted in the shooting of Boyd. What prompted the attack is still being looked into and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries as confirmed by officials.

The attack took place just after 2am on Sunday morning in the area between Madison Square Garden and Times Square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was transported to Bellevue Hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, according to authorities. The assailant escaped.

Glenn said Boyd has occupied his thinking “a ton” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a child.

“My initial concern, he recently became a father,” Glenn said. “My mind went to his family, considering his child and I want to make sure that he’s OK. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There’s a process to this, I’ll keep private, but It is reassuring that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd did not participate in the present campaign, his first with the Jets, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on 18 August with an injury to his shoulder that needed an operation.

He signed with New York as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was expected to be a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during preseason drills on August 2 and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd continued to be present all season long while working his way back.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn stated. “Certainly, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, from Texas, began his career with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of UT in the 2019 draft. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and later was with the Texans subsequently. Boyd signed a one-year contract for $1.6 million with New York in March.
