The Gunners' boss remains confident that his side can keep managing with player absences after revealing that star striker Kai Havertz will not return for a few more weeks.

Prolonged Recovery for Havertz

Havertz has been absent since the summer following an operation on his knee. Initially expected to return at the start of this month, Arteta revealed the player faced a hurdle when stepping up his rehabilitation and was unable to move forward “the next phase.”

“We took lessons, and managed to assemble a squad that is considerably steadier and has increased versatility,” stated the manager.

Selection Dilemma for Brentford Clash

This news leaves a tactical puzzle for the midweek match against Brentford. The manager needs to decide between continuing to use Mikel Merino, who scored as a makeshift striker against Chelsea, or recalling Viktor Gyökeres, who featured briefly after a fitness issue in the latter stages. Long-term absentee Gabriel Jesus is also in contention after 11 months out.

Defensive Concerns Remain

More doubts affect centre-back William Saliba and winger Leandro Trossard, who both missed the Chelsea match. Therefore, recent arrivals Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié are likely to continue in central defence for the table-toppers.

The manager is convinced the significant outlay on squad depth in the last transfer window has left Arsenal in a far better place to deal with such unavailability.

Greater Options Key to Title Challenge

In response if increased squad depth was benefiting their championship push, the manager agreed. “Yes, because this season has presented greater challenges in certain positions, and now what’s happening with the defence,” he added.

“History has shown us that we must deploy players in various roles, and they need to be prepared to perform various functions if we are to fight at this level. And the example of Mikel is probably the prime illustration.”

Manager’s Sympathy for Frustrated Star

Speaking about the delay highlighted by national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, the manager gave additional context. “He was doing everything. He could not go to the next level and now it’s looking like we have solved that issue.”

He shared his keenness to have him back. “We’re all desperate to have him. Honestly, he is a footballer who, for me, I value highly for what he brings to the team, but his mentality, his attitude. I watch him struggle while sidelined.”

“His fitness history is exceptional, he’s been always available, and I am eagerly awaiting to have him back involved on the pitch because I feel it’s going to be a massive boost.”
