Pope Strengthens Position to England Cricket's No 3 Spot with Strong 90 Versus Lions

It is tough to determine how relevant of England's preparatory game will prove meaningful when their Ashes campaign kicks off not far at Perth Stadium on the coming Friday – a brief gap in geography or duration but light years away in import and atmosphere – but if it accomplished only boosting Pope's self-belief, that on its own has made the effort worthwhile.

England's number three batsman – that much is undoubtedly completely established – built on his first-innings century by adding an additional 90 in the second, and the most impressive was less about the number of runs but the way in which they were scored. On occasion the 27-year-old looked commanding, smashing a dozen boundaries and a two of maximums, timing the ball sweetly but with aggressive determination.

It was merely a practice match versus a Lions team that deployed fully 11 pitchers throughout a match played in before a few dozen of onlookers in a public park, but it was nonetheless hugely noteworthy. To note, England, chasing of 202 after the Lions closed their second innings on 251 for six, succeeded by five wickets in hand after Smith raced the team past the conclusion with a stream of fours and sixes.

Joe Root clocked up another 31 runs but was not hugely convincing during the English team's preparatory.

Crawley and Ben Duckett, the two other big first-innings performers, both fell short in the second innings, while Joe Root scored several more points – 31 on this occasion – but was not significantly more convincing, before being bemused and duly bowled by Jacks. Harry Brook experienced an identical fate shortly after.

Bashir – who ended the fixture having delivered 12 overs for either team – will have encountered part of the strokes he bowled to pretty challenging. His opening six overs versus the Lions cost 56, with McKinney tucking in to pitching that if not exactly wayward was definitely not very dangerous.

At the end the sixth of that period, the English side's other pitchers had conceded roughly the equivalent number of runs – 57 – from 15, though the bowler turned a slightly less generous later on, conceding 27 from his final six. He claimed a single wicket, holding a clever, low-down catch, leaning to his right side, to conclude Bethell's innings for 70, facing 80 deliveries.

Bethell, compensating for managing merely a small score in the initial innings, was among a trio of half-centurions in the Lions team's top four. Ben McKinney's returns from opener were more consistent than those from their No 3: he scored 66 in their first batting effort and improved by two in their follow-up, facing 61 deliveries for his fifty, with five fours and two maximums, each off Bashir's's pitching. Jacob Bethell made 68 before a poor shot to Ben Stokes at cover, who took a low catch at shin level.

Cox exhibited like reliability, and followed his initial innings' 53 with an additional 57, at about a run per delivery. There were some remarkably beautiful shots during his innings, featuring a straight hit and a pull shot against consecutive Carse deliveries to reach his fifty.

After missing the opening day of this fixture with a stomach upset and contributed only the smallest of inputs to the second day, Carse pitched superbly when eventually given the opportunity, with McKinney and Jordan Cox included in his three dismissals.
