New York City's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to make his home in the historic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind his rent-controlled apartment that sparked debate throughout his run for office.

A Traditional Abode

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the primary dwelling for the majority of New York City mayors after the mid-20th century.

However, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a central policy, did not confirm his residency plans right away following his electoral win in November.

"My choice came down to the security of my family and the importance of focusing my full attention on implementing the platform on affordability the city's residents voted for," stated Mamdani in a statement.

A Fond Farewell

He resided in the Queens borough of Astoria, a community renowned for its abundance of immigrant populations and global cuisine.

"To the people of Astoria: many thanks for demonstrating the true spirit of New York City," he noted.

"Even though I'm moving in the neighborhood, Astoria will always live inside me and the work I do," he affirmed.

A Contentious Issue

Throughout his campaign, Mamdani linked his central policy – a rent freeze – to his own housing situation.

Yet his opponents, including one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for remaining in the apartment even though he came from a famous family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Some mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, preferred to remain in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side throughout his time in office, which wrapped up in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg said he believed it ought to be a space for official events, and pushed for an extensive renovation of the older mansion.

A Grand New Home

As he settles into Gracie Mansion sometime around his first day on 1 January, he will be surrounded by surroundings a stark contrast to his modest Astoria digs.

Featuring cream-colored walls, forest green window covers, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house overlooking the East River.

Within, the lower floor of the Federal-style mansion is furnished to reflect the home's early 19th-century origins.

The property, which allegedly has several bedrooms, also boasts increased security measures to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

Some residents have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that they experienced doors opening and closing inexplicably, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

Former Mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "It doesn't matter what anyone says," he declared in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

Affordable Housing Lifeline

Mamdani's current apartment is under rent control, a policy where the city sets limits on how much building managers can hike the monthly cost each year.

City residents see such units as crucial resources as the housing expenses outpaces what many can afford.

Data indicated Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to real estate analysts Zillow, the median rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
