The network's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Significant Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.

Last October, Adult Swim saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the network unveiled a completely new animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, reminiscent of a animated take of a laid-back talk show. In an era often defined by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and helped it become a surprise hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

In mid-December, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The series follows three respectful teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four central characters.

"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and helped it grow," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."

Executive Acclaim

The official statement also included commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He specifically highlighted the fans who discovered the show and supported its distinctly quirky style.

"All of you showed up for this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about observing this charming family navigate their simple existence.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his hope to evolve comedy past its long-running cynical streak. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

The Path Forward

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa could potentially catalyze that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences a little more time to experience the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
