Thrice-crowned NBA MVP Nikola Jokic suffered a "heartbreaking" injury to his knee while the Denver Nuggets lost 147-123 at the Miami Heat.

The star player was hurt towards the end of the second quarter following an inadvertent contact with teammate Jones.

Jones stepped on the foot of the MVP, who instantly collapsed to the court clutching his leg.

The veteran player, who leads the league season in rebounds and dimes, recorded a score of 21 points and eight dimes in the game prior to incurring the injury.

Jokic will undergo an MRI on the following day to evaluate the extent of the injury.

"Right away, Jokic understood he was hurt," stated Nuggets head coach Adelman.

"Injuries are part of the game. Whoever that is injured, it's tough to see, particularly a player as talented as he is. More information will come on Tuesday."

"The team will adjust together. Obviously, at this moment, I am more worried primarily about him as a person and the frustration of going through a situation of that nature."
